Their findings, published online in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, could lead to novel therapeutic approaches for these diseases.

Therapeutic Vaccines: Steady Wins the Race

"Also of interest are personally tailored vaccine strategies, such as the one that made a splash earlier this month at AIDS Vaccine 2009, the annual meeting of the Global HIV Vaccine Enterprise, in Paris. AGS-004, being developed by North Carolina–based Argos, customizes immune system cells from each individual, using HIV fragments known as messenger RNA, to maximize an HIV-positive person’s immune response to the virus. To do this, dendritic cells are removed from the body and combined with mRNA taken from the same individual’s HIV. The data presented at the Paris conference showed that the vaccine, when given just before an ARV treatment interruption, kept viral loads at least 1 log—more than an 80 percent reduction—below pre-ARV therapy levels in 13 of 16 patients."

"Even if access to scientifically proven HIV services were greatly improved by increased funding or improved efficiencies, slowing and ultimately ending the HIV/AIDS pandemic also will likely require major advances in two areas. First, curing a sizable proportion of those already infected with the virus such that lifelong therapy is not required; and, second, developing more powerful prevention tools to slow the rate of new infections. The authors assert that the scientific challenges related to these two goals are the most important issues in HIV/AIDS research today."

Reassurance for HIV-positive women about short-term risk of bone loss

"Short-term rates of bone loss are similar in younger HIV-positive and HIV-negative women, US investigators report in a study published in the online edition of the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes.

"Although HIV-positive women had lower bone mineral density in the lower spine and neck on entry to the study, they had similar rates of bone loss during follow-up. Moreover, HIV treatment was not a risk factor for bone loss.

"'Our results provide some reassurance that short-term bone loss is modest in the majority of premenopausal, weight stable HIV+ women', write the investigators."

GSK and Pfizer launch joint HIV venture, ViiV Healthcare

"The company says that their research will not solely focus on creating new molecules, but will try to develop new formulations that are easier to adhere to, including paediatric fixed-dose combinations.

"Dominique Limet, the new chief executive, told Reuters that 'Our intent is to look at what we can do with the portfolio we get from Pfizer and Glaxo to build new combinations which will completely transform the way we treat HIV.'

While signing the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Act extension, President Obama announced that he is lifting a 22 year ban on US entry of people living with HIV and AIDS. Siting the US leadership role in HIV care around the world, Obama said it was time for the US to start acting like a leader, being one of only a dozen countries that still had a travel ban in place. With this new ruling, the travel ban will be lifted shortly after the first of the year 2010.

President Obama Declares H1N1 a National Emergency

With over 1000 deaths attributed to H1N1 flu staring us all in the face and long lines for what little H1N1 flu vaccine that is available, President Obama has declared H1N1 flu a national emergency. A spokesman from the Obama Administration equates this declaration to local state of emergencies that are declared before a hurricane hits land. With the growing number and rate of infections, and the threat of H1N1 flu cases overwhelming the healthcare system in some communities, this declaration allows a more rapid response and movement of resources to areas that need them. While a little over 16 million doses of H1N1 flu vaccine have been manufactured, experts say that number is nowhere near what was expected for this period in the pandemic. Forty-six states now report widespread H1N1 infections; analogous to the peak of a typical flu season. For the flu season to peak this early is very unusual experts caution, warning we have not yet seen the peak of the H1N1 pandemic.

HIV care providers applaud Congress' extension of Ryan White program

Medical providers on the front lines of HIV care applaud the U.S. Congress for extending the Ryan White Care Act, helping to ensure that more than half a million low-income, uninsured, or underinsured people living with HIV/AIDS have access to lifesaving care. The HIV Medicine Association (HIVMA) and the Ryan White Medical Providers Coalition (RWMPC) are pleased with Congress' four-year extension of this critical safety net and urge President Obama to quickly sign this important legislation. FDA Panel Approves HPV Vaccine for Boys

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given its approval for boys age 9 to 26 to receive the HPV vaccine Gardasil. The vaccine has been in use with females 9 to 26 since 2006. HPV, also known as human papillomavirus can cause cervical cancer in women. In men HPV can lead to anal cancers and genital warts. While there are dozens of strains of HPV, Gardasil targets the 4 that most commonly cause cancers and rectal warts. Ideally, the vaccine is gotten before becoming sexually active since that is the way HPV is transmitted. Note that for now, Gardasil use in boys is only being considered in the prevention of rectal warts not cancers at this time.
